8 Ways to Improve MPG for Diesel and Petrol Vehicles Today

With diesel and petrol prices higher than ever, people want to know quick and effective ways to “reduce fuel consumption”

Below you will find a few suggestions that will help to improve and, in some cases, restore fuel economy, saving you up to 20% on your current fuel costs follow this link to calculate what that means in £s every month and year www.fueloptimiser.co.uk

Buying a car with a smaller engine might seem like a good idea but the reality is less appealing than you might think when you consider total cost of ownership, for example.

  1. Smaller cars are attracting a premium cost because people are thinking that could be a good solution.

  2. If you are swapping your vehicle to save fuel, others are less likely to pay you what it might be worth, so you could end up losing money on that as well as paying a higher price for a smaller engine vehicle.

  3. Smaller engines do not always deliver on the promise of better MPG as they have to work harder, so the power to weight ratio and journey type might have an unexpected impact on fuel efficiency.

Before you drive into buying a new car or van, try these basic tips and tricks to improve your fuel consumption today, and start saving immediately.

Tyres
People often don’t realise how much effect tyres can have on MPG, but you would be surprised so don’t neglect them because they could be costing you pennies every mile you drive.

Check tyre pressures are correct (tyre pressures for your car can be found in the owner’s manual and in some cases door jam or fuel flap.

Correct tyre pressures will save fuel and extend tyre life, make sure that tyres are in good condition because as well as fuel economy, they could save your life.

When your tyres are due for replacement, it is worth investing in tyres with low rolling resistance.

Aircon
Open windows at low speeds and turn your aircon off but if you're driving at higher speeds, close the windows and put the air con on which will help to reduce drag and improve MPG.

Load Carrying
Every extra bit of weight you carry affects the power to weight ratio, more weight means more power is required to move it.

That includes any extra items carried in your vehicle and things like roof racks, removing excess weight and items like external carriers from your car or van, can significantly improve your MPG.

Fuel Tank
Going back to the previous point about weight and power to weight ratio, a full fuel tank obviously weighs much more than a half-full tank.

Of course, only filling up halfway is not always practical, but if it is for you it will reduce the amount of fuel burning weight in your vehicle.

BUT word of warning, driving with too little fuel can damage various parts of your vehicle, for example in “petrol cars” the catalytic converter, so we would advise adding fuel before the warning light comes on.

Mindful Driving
Be more aware of your driving style.

  1. Try to accelerate gently rather than race away from junctions

  2. Try to stick to steady speeds on main roads and where possible use cruise control

  3. Setting your cruising speed to 65 will save fuel but also keep you ahead of HGV’s enough that you don’t slow them down.

  4. Think ahead if you see a set of lights that you think you might have to stop for allow your vehicle to slow naturally to avoid heavy braking by rushing up to the lights

  5. Don’t try and change up into higher gears until the vehicle is ready, changing too soon in the rev range will cause drivetrain rumble and is counterproductive.

Maintenance

  1. Regular servicing of your vehicle including filters and quality oil will pay dividends in terms of efficiency and better MPG

  2. You might be tempted to use cheap parts and or avoid service intervals altogether, but it’s a false economy and you will pay the price in reduced MPG

  3. Replacing a dirty air filter, spark plugs or engine oil will all help to improve your MPG.

  4. Having your vehicle serviced and documented on a regular basis will also help to retain the value of your vehicle when you come to sell.

  5. Using a good quality fuel additive will offer a range of benefits  Click Here for more information.

HHO Carbon Clean

  1. The inside of your engine will have some carbon build up but how much will depend on a variety of factors including the age of the engine, type of fuel, how it's driven etc

  2. Carbon build-up will affect the efficiency of the engine and potentially can lead to loss of performance and poor MPG

  3. Having a professionally administered HHO Carbon clean once a year will help to keep your vehicle's engine in good condition and aid overall performance and efficiency.

  1. ECU remapping takes many different forms and levels of effectiveness/engine safety depending on the remapping provider you select

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY

Choosing a Good Tuner is as important as choosing a Good Doctor.

You will be presented with a bewildering selection of companies, all claiming to be the best in the industry. Unfortunately the industry has been flooded with “Get Rich Quick” merchants all desperate to take your money from you. In many cases the “Get Rich Quick” operators have invested in “Cloned” counterfeit remapping tools off the internet. They have little “if any” industry knowledge, experience or liability insurance…

Don’t get sucked in by a good story and what appears to be an incredible price. Instead of taking the word of self-acclaimed tuning experts, a search on google will reveal some very interesting, yet disturbing facts about a few “so called” professionals. Unlike some testimonials “Bert for Bognor says we are Brill” our customers are real people. Don’t take our word for it, ask the people that know best “Our Customers”

I went for a remap on my T5 as it had an awful flat spot around 2800 rev's I got great personal service and its like having a new engine in the van smooth power and greater economy.... Highly recommended wish I'd done it months ago it would have paid for it self already thanks a lot hills are no longer a drag.

Popped in to see Mike on Friday to have my A4 2.0TDi 170hp remapped. Have to say I was a little pessimistic at first having being told by another firm that remaps on these were a nightmare so was expecting the worst! Thankfully, nothing of the sort, straight in, one error message unknown but Mike worked it out and all done in no time. Straight out for a test run and the drive is very different, certainly mid ranged (where these engines seem to suffer) pulls away nicely and can definitely feel the benefit. Best money I've ever spent on a car in, well, forever! Thanks again Mike

Took my Civic Mk VIII 2.2 CDTI to Mike following a recommendation from a friend who's had his last few cars remapped at MPG., professional service and answered any questions I had. Customised remap that gave me a good balance between performance and economy. Mike was happy to let me watch the whole procedure and explained what he was doing. Makes a good brew as well! Would highly recommend, Will definitely bring my future motors here.
