The REAL cost of driving a New Car REVEALED
The cost of car ownership is hitting drivers hard and research demonstrates that running a car is a huge financial commitment, often accounting for a substantial percentage of household income. What you spend on finance, repairs, tax and insurance could buy you a home in most parts of the UK, and that’s without accounting for fuel.
Why do people want a New Car?
Driving a new car can give people a great sense of self-worth and freedom, so it might be the case that they consider its worth the cost., even though it means sacrificing so much. Are you ready for the automotive industry revolution…
Depreciation
If you are on finance whether that be via PCP or HP depreciation of the vehicle will affect you because the cost of that depreciation must be accounted for somewhere. This could affect you in the amount you pay each month, your final payment or both and certainly if you opt for ownership at the end of your contract.
Hire Purchase HP v Personal contract plan PCP
In the image above, you can see a comparison between two of the most popular methods of funding the use of a New car. A third option is to buy the car outright, but not many people have £20,000 collecting dust.
This is how HP works
Hire purchase (HP) is a type of borrowing. It is different from other types of borrowing because you don't own the goods until you have paid in full. Under an HP agreement, you hire the goods and then pay an agreed amount by instalments. Until you’ve paid a third of the total amount payable the lender can repossess the car without a court order.
Ownership
If you want to own the car at the end of the HP, you’ll have to pay a final payment as agreed in the original agreement terms.
This is how a PCP works
A personal contract plan (PCP) deal will offer flexible terms, which include low monthly payments and most often a low rate of interest. But there can be negatives that can have a negative impact if you're not careful, so read the small print carefully.

Minor Damage
The small print of the personal contract plan usually include financial penalties for minor damage to the car while it's in your possession.
Mileage Limit
If you exceed the stated mileage limit, there is usually cost per excess mile penalty to pay too. You need to be fully conversant with the facts when choosing between HP and a PCP agreement. Depending on the terms of the PCP it might be cheaper to opt for a HP agreement instead.
Ownership
If you want to own the car at the end of the PCP, you’ll have to pay an often-substantial final payment, known as a balloon payment.
Other costs operating costs
So now you have decided how to fund your car, you must consider other running costs.
Servicing and Repairs
Servicing is an extra cost you can opt for at the beginning of the agreement, or you can pay as you go, the cost will vary according to your car and mileage. Its estimated that average cost of an annual service across the industry is £425, if you have the car for a 24 month period you would normally only need to pay for one service.
Warranty
If you only plan to have your car over a two year period any faults with the car should be covered under the manufacturer’s warranty.
Insurance Cost
According to recent polls, British drivers are likely to spend an average £752 per year on their annual car insurance in the UK.
Popularity of PCP
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, recently reported that about 80 per cent of new cars in the UK are supplied via Personal Contract Plans. Are you ready for the automotive industry revolution…
