WHAT IS AN ECU (ENGINE CONTROL UNIT)

All modern cars and vans have an ECU (otherwise known as an ENGINE CONTROL UNIT). 

This Engine Control Unit acts as the vehicle’s ‘brain’, containing a small processor that receives information from various sensors throughout the engine, forming the foundation of modern engine remapping and vehicle remapping..

It analyses a wide range of parameters such as the engine temperature, accelerator pedal position, oxygen content in the burnt exhaust gases as well as many others. Using the information from these sensors, in conjunction with data lookup tables in the ECU map software, it can then calculate various factors to provide optimal performance and fuel efficiency, often enhanced through a fuel economy remap.

What Is Remapping | Chiptuning

Remapping is a software change where the operating parameters are modified in the vehicle ECU program (MAP). We do not change or add any hardware to your vehicle. In most cases, the map data is stored on the ECU’s processor which we can access via the OBD (onboard diagnostics port), normally found under the dashboard, making ECU tuning safe and efficient.

In some newer and much older models, we may be required to remove the ECU from the vehicle and program on the bench as part of specialist engine remapping procedures.

Once our IMI professionally certified programmers have made software changes to your ECU map data to optimise performance, fuel economy, or a balance of both, the modified data map will be uploaded to your ECU using professional ECU remapping techniques.

I went for a remap on my T5 as it had an awful flat spot around 2800 rev's I got great personal service and its like having a new engine in the van smooth power and greater economy.... Popped in to see Mike on Friday to have my A4 2.0TDi 170hp remapped. Have to say I was a little pessimistic at first having being told by another firm that remaps on these were a nightmare so was expecting the worst! Thankfully, nothing of the sort, straight in, one error message unknown but Mike worked it out and all done in no time. Straight out for a test run and the drive is very different, certainly mid ranged (where these engines seem to suffer) pulls away nicely and can definitely feel the benefit.
