What is the VAG Group 23CY Recall

The 23CY software is related to problems with exhaust gas emission levels.

The invitation to install the software update was made to owners of vehicles with the EA 288 diesel engine (the successor to the VW engine with the designation EA189). 

The update, it appears has been installed in numerous vehicles in the VAG Group range, from Audi, Seat, Skoda and VW's manufactured since 2012.

This is a developing story so facts here may be corrected or changed as we find out more.

As part of the "Update referred to as 23CY" the engine management software in the vehicle's brain "ECU" of the affected engines is updated to address an error detection issue in the SCR system. 

The SCR system is designed to reduce exhaust emissions. 

It seems that the emissions system of the affected vehicles is not working as it should meaning that it is likely the systems were manipulated illegally and so affected by the emissions scandal.

Information about this update is hard to find but this is a reply one Audi owner received when he enquired about the update 

The action is not voluntary but a software change imposed by the manufacturer to comply with the emission values specified by the legislator.
This must be carried out, otherwise, the vehicle does not comply with the registration requirements worldwide, the affected vehicles have been successfully retrofitted and if the damage can be proven to have been caused by the modification, the manufacturer can be contacted. the removal of the software is not possible for us and also not permissible I hope to have helped you so far.

I went for a remap on my T5 as it had an awful flat spot around 2800 rev's I got great personal service and its like having a new engine in the van smooth power and greater economy.... Highly recommended wish I'd done it months ago it would have paid for it self already thanks a lot hills are no longer a drag.

Popped in to see Mike on Friday to have my A4 2.0TDi 170hp remapped. Have to say I was a little pessimistic at first having being told by another firm that remaps on these were a nightmare so was expecting the worst! Thankfully, nothing of the sort, straight in, one error message unknown but Mike worked it out and all done in no time. Straight out for a test run and the drive is very different, certainly mid ranged (where these engines seem to suffer) pulls away nicely and can definitely feel the benefit.
